Weight Distribution System Recommendation for a 7,800 Pound Trailer
Question:
i have an 10 yr old reese trunnion style wd system my trailer weighs 7800 lbs. my tw about1000 lbs the trunnions slip in from the front instead of the side like the new ones. one of my swivel latches has broken off that secures the top trunnion in the slot . i am afraid to use it with out the swivel latch .nothing to keep it in . should i upgrade to a new head?

There have been several design changes to Reese weight distribution systems over the years so chances are high that even if you replace the head, you would also need to replace the spring bars. The cost of this is comparable to replacing the whole system.
I do recommend replacing the whole system because not only is cost nearly the same but you will also have all new parts that will offer better performance than the old system with a few new components.
A very good economical system would be the Reese system, part # 49570. This kit also includes the shank so you would just need a properly sized ball such as # 19286 (2-5/16 inch diameter) or # A-90 (2 inch diameter). I have included a link to our FAQ article on weight distribution for you to view.
