Electric Trailer Brake Controller Installation on a 2010 Chevy Silverado
Question:
My 16 ft. trailer has 1 set of electric breakes on it. Will this controller work on my 2010 silverado 1500 and the trailer? The truck came with a tow package. It has the factory 7-way on it, but no electric brake control. The wires for the control are already run under the dash. Also will I need to install a 20 amp in line cirect breaker?

Brake controllers are not vehicle specific, so you will be able to install the Tekonsha P3, # 90195, in your 2010 Silverado. Since the trailer has electric brakes, it will work with this controller.
As you have said, the wiring for a brake controller is located under the dash of your truck. The wires should be held together with a white tag that also lists the functions for each wire. You will just need to connect the proper tow package wires to the brake controller.
Wire coloring/function can change from year to year so below should be used as a guide. If the white tag reads differently, follow it instead.
Tow Package Red wire connects to brake controller black wire (12 volt power)
Tow Package Dark Blue wire connects to brake controller blue wire (output to trailer brakes)
Tow Package Light Blue wire connects to brake controller red wire (in from stop light switch)
Tow Package White wire connects to brake controller white wire (ground)
You will not need to install a circuit breaker. However, there may be some connections that will need to be made under the hood to make everything fully functional. I have included a link to an FAQ article that should help. You need the section near the end titled Finalizing Connections for the Brake Controller.
I have also included a link to the installation details for the brake controller and a link showing an installation on a 2011 model which will be very similar to your truck.
