What is the Best Thule Brand 4 Bike Rack for a New Ram 1500
Question:
I have a dodge ram 1500 with a 2x2 factory mounted hitch. I'm looking for a 4 bike hitch mount rack. I'd prefer one that will allow me to lower the tailgate when no bikes are loaded. I do a fair amount of travel with the bikes so I want something durable, solid and quiet. I've narrowed it to the Thule racks. Do you have an opinion on which is best?

You can't go wrong with a Thule brand bike rack. Thule is an industry leader who is known for their quality. The best 4 bike rack for your Ram 1500 is the Thule T2 Pro XTR # TH83JV 2-Bike Rack with 2-bike Add-On # TH9036XT. The T2 Pro XTR can hold the widest variety of bike frame styles, it comes with a cable lock and hitch lock and a quick and easy AutoAttach system that requires zero tools to go from a 4-bike rack to a 2-bike rack.
The main downside to this bike rack and almost any platform style bike rack is the size and weight. This bike rack weighs 96 lbs, but it durable, solid and quiet just like you are looking for.
If the weight or cost are factors that may present a problem for you, then your next best option is the Thule Hitching Post Pro 4 Bike Rack, TH934XTR, which weighs just under 40 lbs and comes in at a much more cost effective price point. This is a hanging style rack, so if you plan on carrying any womens, childrens or alternative frame style bikes, then you will also want to pick up the Thule Bike Adapter Bar, # TH982XT, to make loading the bikes easier and safer.
I should also point out that the weight capacity for the T2 Pro XTR is 60 lbs per bike when using the 2-bike rack, or 160 lbs total with the 2-bike add on. per bike and the 35 lbs. per bike for the Hitching Post Pro. That may factor into your decision as well depending on the types of bikes you plan on carrying.
I've attached video reviews for each bike rack and the bike adapter bar for you to check out.
