Is it Safe to Carry a Bike Rack and Bikes with Swagman Specialty Trailer Hitch, # S64025

Question:

Im new to trailering, and have a 1967 15 Safari travel trailer. I want to use a hitch like the s64025 on the 4 steel rear bumper so I can mount my Thule bike rack for trips. I see lots of blog posts on the internet from people who say adding that kind of load maybe 80-90 lbs with the bikes to the rear bumper isnt safe, and that rear separation can occur. Is it safe to carry the bikes back there?? Thanks.

It is safe provided that the bumper and trailer are rated for this type of application. You will need to find out the weight capacity of the bumper and if there are any restrictions on what you can carry on it using the Swagman Specialty Trailer Hitch, # S64025.

Another option would be to install a frame mounted trailer hitch to the trailer. I recommend the Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch, # 13703, because it fits frames from 22 to 72 inches wide, and box, I-beam, or C-channel frames. I have included a link to the installation details for you to view.

Another issue is that there are only certain bike racks that are rated for use behind an RV or trailer. I have included a link to them for you to view. There is considerable more bouncing and stress for a rack at the back of a travel trailer, so not all bikes racks are rated for this application.
