How to Wire an Electric Winch on a Utility Trailer
Question:
I have a 16’ utility trailer and want to put a winch on the trailer along with a 12v battery to run it. I want to be able to charge the battery while driving. I have a 2011 Ram 1500 with a round 7 pin connection on the rear. Can I use this to charge the extra battery? If so how would I hook it up. I plan on keeping a battery maintainer on the battery when not connected to the vehicle. Thank you

I do have options for you but the 12 volt power supply in the 1 o'clock position on your 2011 Ram 1500's 7-way trailer connector will not be sufficient to charge a battery used to power an electric winch. You will instead need to run a battery charger from the vehicle's alternator to the trailer's battery using a battery charger like the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger # 331-BCDC1225D. This charger will both charge and maintain the trailer's battery.
The other option you have would eliminate the need for an additional battery as it will use the vehicle's battery to power the winch and in order to do that you will want to use the Bulldog Winch Rear Wiring Kit part # BDW20207. You will also need to install a circuit breaker 6" from the battery that is rated for your winch.
I have attached our "how to wire an electric winch" help article which I fell will be of use to you as well as an install video of the above winch wiring kit.
