Troubleshooting Trailer Connection on 2005 Nissan Pathfinder
Question:
Regarding part # 118267 from my recent ORDER : I am trying to get my ready to safely bring a trailer home next weekend. My tow vehicle is a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder. It has a factory tow package w/ relays, an input for a brake controller, etc. It only came with a 4-pin attachment. After confirming that everything lined up, I purchased this OEM adapter from etrailer part # 118267. After hooking everything up including my brake controller, I took my multimeter out to check the 7-pins in the back. This is where I am having concerns. The multimeter lights up with ~10v or so on the running light pin, as well as on the reverse pins when the truck is put into reverse. The Brake Controller Pin seems to be hot at well. When I hit the brakes and/or turn on the left turn signal, the left turn/brake pin is hot as well. Unfortunately, when I test the pin for the right hand lights both brake and turn signal nothing is happening. This has me really concerned. Also, nothing is happening with the 12v line, but I am not sure if that has something to do with not being hooked up to the trailer? As a side note, this run of Nissans has a history of the factory mixing up the 2-pole black and blue wires to the 12v and brakes. I am not sure how to tell if this is happening in my case, but it seems to be easy to splice and swap those lines what happens is when you attach the trailer the brakes controller locks up the electric brakes - that is how most folks learn they need to splice and swap. But regardless, I dont see what that would have to do with my right side lights. Any insight, as I am not sure where else to turn and I hate the idea of having to pay an installer for what should have been a plug and play upgrade. Thank you!

The Replacement Wiring Harness for Tow Ready Nissan Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118267 is a fit for your vehicle. The brake wire should not be hot and the 12V wire should be, so I believe you have the switched wires you were referring to. Regarding your right hand brake and turn signal, it sounds like you are not getting power from your connection. This often is simply a bent pin at the connector. I recommend checking that and then putting your tester on that function at the connection point. This will tell you if you have a possible relay issue or a wiring issue further up-line.
The brake controller output should not have any draw until a trailer is connected. You can test this function still by using your manual override slider to push power to that pin for testing. It should gradually increase voltage in response to how far you slide that override.
