Hopkins Reliance Brake Controller E1 Message on a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado
Question:
This might be a dumb question, but I just wired up the Hopkins Reliance brake controller up on my 2008 silverado 4x4. I used a combination of instructions from this site How to wire a brake controller on a 2008 GMC/Chevrolet. The instructions that came with the controller, which wasnt much, called for running wires from the battery to the back of the truck etc... I hooked up the controller to my harness taped up under the dash per instructions. I then ran the 2 wires on each side of my fuse box under the hood to the terminals there per instructions on this site. I havent tried them to see if they work, but when driving down the road, I get an E1 message only when I hit the brakes. It means that there is no trailer connected, I know and I havent hooked the truck up to a trailer yet,but is it supposed to do that every time I hit the brakes? Trailer or no trailer, it says that when I hit the brakes, then goes away once I release the brakes and push the gas. Everything else like the digital settings and release work fine. Its just the E1 popping up only when my foot is on the brake. I know the controller is a cheaper one, but that seems like it will get annoying real quick. Im just wondering if it is supposed to do that, or if I went wrong somewhere. Thanks.

The representative at Hopkins informed me that the E1 message will appear when you activate the brakes on your vehicle and there is not a trailer connected. When the trailer is connected, and you activate the brakes, you should not get an E1 error code.
The wires of the brake controller should be connected the following way:
Blue - Brake Control Output
Black - 12 volt power
White - Ground
Red - Connected to stoplight switch, wire that only has power when brake pedal pressed
I have linked an FAQ on the under hood connections that you mentioned that should be made on your 2008 Chevrolet Silverado.
