For your 1986 Ford F-350, the factory wiring connector you need to start with is the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness # HM40115. This custom-fit connector plugs into your Ford F-350's wiring harness, which is located beneath your vehicle along the driver's-side frame rail.
Then you will need to use the Universal Brake Controller Wiring Kit # ETBC7 to utilize that 4-way connection and add the other 3 functions of reverse, 12v, and brake controller output. This kit will give you the wire, connectors, and circuit breakers needed for your system.
For your brake controller, I recommend the Prodigy P3 # 90195. This is a proportional brake controller that will deliver the same braking pressure to your trailer at the same time as you hit the brake pedal in your truck. It has easy to use presets and has a really nice LCD screen that takes code deciphering out of the equation. These combinations will give you a very reliable and easy to use system. I've attached videos to assist.
