Recommended Fifth Wheel Rail Kit and Hitch for 2015 Ford F-250 Long Bed

Question:

I have a 2015 F-250 long bed that does not have the fifth wheel prep pkg. Looking at installing the rails and the brackets that bolt to the frame for the rail system. I have an older 5th wheel hitch that will attach to the rails. Has been kept inside but thought maybe I should purchase a new one. Fifth wheel is about 11K loaded so was looking at around a 16K hitch? What is your opinion and what model would you recommend that would be reasonable? Going this route as I have been told labor is $$$ to install. I noticed you said a Reese single jaw is superior to a Curt double jaw, Can you explain double jaw vs single jaw? Thanks Thanks

For your 2015 Ford F-250, I recommend the Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # RP50026-58. There is no drilling into your frame required with this kit because it utilizes holes already there for a custom fit. The above bed rails will require drilling, but the installation is easy knowing the rails are in the correct position. This kit will come with all the hardware needed for installation.

For a hitch, a double jaw hitch is almost always a better choice than a single jaw unless there is a known issue with a particular hitch. A single jaw typically has a slide bar so it will not give you as much king pin contact and will give you more jarring and chucking due to less contact all the way around the kingpin. There are exceptions, but in general a double jaw will actually have more king pin contact which is ideal.

For an economical 5th wheel hitch, your current hitch may work, but if you choose to upgrade to a new one there are definitely improvements over the years. I recommend the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - Dual Jaw - 16,000 lbs # C16120. The jaws on this hitch interlock for a nice king pin fit for more secure connection. This hitch also has an indicator system that shows when you have a secure connection. It has 2 built in grease zerks for easy lubrication to maintain function.

For a stronger hitch, I recommend the Reese M5 # RP30928. This will have a dual jaw design for great king pin contact, and will give you a smooth ride.

You may also want to consider the # 50-97-410 for a 7-way wiring connector in the bed of your truck for easy connection access.
