Recommendations for Surge Brake Boat Trailer Pushing Tow Vehicle
Question:
I have a 2003 4runner v6 - 5k lbs tow limit with factory tow package. I am towing a 3k lbs boat 34 gallon fuel tank = 272 lbs additional on a single axle trailer with surge disk brakes assume 1200 lbs, plus an assumed 300 lbs of gear = +/-4800 lbs of total tow. So far I have not experienced much sway but definitely feel lots of pushing under braking. What options do I have to aid in braking and load control? Thank you

For your boat trailer, the towing weight isn't an issue, so I recommend you start by checking your current braking system. It sounds like you may need to adjust your brake assemblies, so I'd check them first to make sure they are working properly. You may need to use the brake adjustment tool like # W80630. If they are adjusted and not working as you wish, next I would visually inspect the brake shoes for wear or replacement. If that also checks out, then try to redistributed the weight of your cargo putting as much weight directly over your axle as possible and then more to the front of it.
If that doesn't help, then I recommend looking into a weight distribution system. Based on the weights you gave, I recommend the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control - 10,000 lbs GTW, 1,000 lbs TW # EQ37100ET along with the pole tongue adapter # EQ95-01-5950. This will assist with better distributing the weight of your trailer as well as assisting should sway occur. I also recommend the thin walled socket # ALL643216 to install the hitch ball that comes with this system.
