Question:
This is wider than the back of my 2017 Subaru Outback. Will this still work or will it cause an adverse situation.

If the GearSpace 34 Enclosed Cargo Carrier # HGK826 is just slightly wider than your 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon you should be just fine. Something this big would cause some extra wind resistance which may affect fuel economy a little, but the only time you will need to be concerned is if the carrier were to be significantly wider. If it were to extend past the width of your vehicle's mirrors then that would definitely cause problems.
I did look up the width of your Outback Wagon and found that it should have a width of 72.4" (not including the mirrors). Since the GearSpace only measures 68" long (which would be equivalent to the width of your vehicle) it will actually be slightly less wide than your Outback Wagon.
If you would like to add a lock to the anti-rattle hitch pin to deter theft of the carrier then you will want to get the Snap-On Lock # ACC3250 as well.
This carrier does weigh 160 lbs so you will want to subtract that from the Tongue Weight (TW) of your vehicle/trailer hitch (whichever is lower) when deciding what you can safely carry.
