What Fuses Need to be Pulled to Flat Tow 2017 Honda Fit

Question:

I took a look at the online owner's manual for your 2017 Honda Fit EX. It starts off by stating that only the manual transmission models of the Honda Fit can be towed behind a motorhome with all four wheels on the ground. For extended towing (more than eight hours in one day) you will need to remove the 20 amp accessory power socket and 7.5 amp ACC fuses. These fuses are located in the interior fuse box. You will also want to remove the 15 amp back up fuse located in the engine compartment fuse box. These fuses are removed in order to prevent the battery from running down during your trip. I highly recommend checking your copy of the owner's manual to verify this information and for any other guidelines and steps regarding flat towing the vehicle. In order to flat tow your Honda Fit, you will need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, tow bar lights, and a supplemental braking system. For base plates, I recommend the Roadmaster EZ4 Base Plate Kit # RM-521569-4. These are custom-fit for your vehicle and feature a hidden bracket design for a nice, clean look when you aren't towing. For a compatible tow bar, I like the Roadmaster Falcon 2 # RM-520. This is an excellent tow bar that has a 6,000 pound capacity and extra-long, telescoping arms that will allow for better maneuverability and easier towing. For a safety cable set, you can use the Roadmaster # RM-643. Then for tow bar wiring/lighting solution, I recommend the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flex-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267. This diode kit will allow you to use your vehicle's tail lights and wiring system while preventing feedback from the RV. You can add the Roadmaster FuseMaster Fuse Bypass # RM76511 and # RM76512, which will take the hassle out of having to remove the above mentioned fuses every time you tow. Once installed, this will allow you to bypass the fuses in question with a flip of a switch. Then for a supplemental braking system, I really like the Blue Ox Patriot II # BRK2016. This proportional system will physically press down on the brake pedal in your Honda Fit at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your RV. Lastly, you will likely need a high-low adapter in order to keep your tow bar level. I have attached an article that explains how to choose the best one for your setup, along with a link to our available selection. I have also included various video demonstrations on the products mentioned and an FAQ on flat towing that you might find helpful.

Even if you were to use a battery charger, such as the Roadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit # RM-156-25 along with # RM-156-75 for motor homes, you will still need to pull the fuses as indicated in the owner's manual for your Honda Fit. A charger will do a nice job of keeping the battery in good shape during your trip, but with the fuses left in place, the battery might still end up depleted. The Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain Tow Bar # RM-522 that you mentioned is another excellent choice that will work great. It is compatible with the base plates mentioned above and as you mentioned, features a non-binding design that will allow you to release your Honda Fit at any time, even on unlevel ground. I suggested the Roadmaster Falcon 2 # RM-520 for its more economical price, as it does have many of the same features. I like the EZ4 # RM-521569-4 Base Plate Kit a bit more than the EZ5 model because of some of the restrictions that come with the EZ5 design. With the EZ5 Base Plates, you will not be able to use a Guardian rock shield, the Tow Defender, and a various tow bar models. If you ever wanted to add these accessories, you would not be able to with the EZ5 base plates so it simply makes it a bit more limited. I took another look at the online owner's manual for your Honda Fit and did see that it states you should not exceed 65 mph when towing the vehicle. This information is located on page 308 of the online version.
