Troubleshooting Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera with No Power on 2010 Ford F-150

Question:

I installed this unit by all your instructions in my 2010 Ford 150, check and cleaned all connections , checked all fuses involved , still no power to camera. Surely someone else has had this problem with this same truck....Should I disconnect the 7 way plug, put it back the way Ford had it, and hot wire the camera to back up circuit, ???? or am I missing a fuse or relay somewhere ? p.s. Ford dealer, parts department, no help, had no idea.....

If the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera # HM50002 referenced in your question is not powering on with your 2010 Ford F-150, I recommend testing the 7-Way connector at the rear of the truck (without the camera installed). You can use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 and test the reverse circuit pin (should be the center pin) on the connecter while you have a buddy sit in the cab to put the vehicle in reverse while the emergency brake is applied and applying pressure to the brake pedal.

If the pin does not show power, then there is an issue somewhere on the vehicle wiring, specifically with the reverse light circuit wire. The Smart Hitch will only come on when the vehicle is put in reverse and this circuit is activated. You will want to trace the reverse light circuit wire back from the 7-Way and check for any damaged or exposed areas, simply repairing as needed.

If you do show power at this pin on the connector, then the issue is somewhere on the wire going between the camera and monitor. Make sure there are no crimped or damaged sections of wire.

I did also take a look at the online owner's manual for your 2010 Ford F-150. I recommend checking for the 15 amp fuse located in the number 58 position inside your power distribution box. This is located in the engine compartment. This fuse is specifically for the trailer tow backup lamps, so you will want to make sure it is present and in working condition.

If you still are unable to resolve the issue, please let me know and I will be happy to look into this further.
