Why is Long 2018 Bed Ram 3500 with Factory Rail Kit Preferred Over Short Bed

Question:

I read your answer to Kevin about this issue and it was stated you definitely would want a long bed. My question is why, a ram 3500 short bed, equipped appropriately will pull a little over 30,000 lbs with a pin weight of 5600 lbs according to their website. Second question is how accurate are the manufacturers numbers when it comes to towing capacities? I’ll have a lot of money tied up in a truck and I cannot afford to buy a truck that doesn’t work nor do I want to risk my life or others if there is a problem Thanks

The biggest reason you want a long bed truck over a short bed truck when you are fifth wheel towing is turning clearance. With a long bed truck you don't have to worry about the truck cab coming into contact with the trailer overhang around tight turns. With a short bed truck you have to go with a slider hitch which means one extra step everytime you need to get into or out of a parking lot. Slider hitches are also heavier and have more moving parts so in general they create a bit more movement.

So assuming you went with a 2017/2018 Ram 3500 long bed with the factory rail kit the hitch I'd recommend is the # BWRVK3600 as it fits the rail kit directly and gives you the nicest fifth wheel hitch around. People love this hitch because it's reliable, quiet, easy to use, and easier to install and remove from the truck.

Check out the review video I attached for this hitch for you to check out as well.

Manufacturer capacities are conservative but accurate. As long as you stay under them you will be totally fine.
