The Fastway e2 Weight Distribution Hitch # FA94-00-0600 will work fine in the 2-inch hitch on your Explorer and will be able to handle a trailer with a loaded tongue weight (TW) of 400- to 600-lbs. It is really the trailer, rather than the vehicle, that needs to match the weight distribution system.
Ideally the total TW of the fully-loaded trailer will fall in the middle of the system's operating range.
Keep in mind that cargo weight in the Explorer that sits behind the rear axle (a generator or loaded cooler for example) must be factored into the TW calculation.
You can measure the loaded trailer TW using the etrailer scale # e99044 and then add the weight of any cargo in the back of the Explorer. As long as this combined weight is near the middle of the system's range you are all set.
The e2 does not include a hitch ball so you'll want to add one with a 1-1/4-inch diameter shank such as 2-5/16-inch ball # 19286.
