Recommended Trailer Battery Charging To Allow AC, Refrigerator, and Landing Gear To Function
Question:
Batteries run down converter in tow and I have to hook up shore power to landing gear and run fridge again. DC power is fine. Other trucks will power and recharge batteries to run all ac. Ford says I have 14.28 power from pins. Jayco says trailer is running everything right. If I can’t get shore power I can’t unhook, auto level, or run my fridge. Is there a component on my ford system they aren’t thinking about?

When your trailer battery is properly charged, you should not need your vehicle connected or shore power to un your landing gear. Your trailer battery is most likely not getting the charge it needs. From your 14.28V you are getting from your 7-way connection, that will only provide a small maintenance charge to your battery and won't allow it to get over 80 charged. You would need to use a battery charger when not towing to get it up to full power to run your landing gear, fridge, and AC. The best way to get your vehicle to fully charge your trailer battery so you can run your fridge, AC, and run your landing gear is to use the Redarc In-Vehicle DC to DC Battery Charger - Dual Input - 12V/24V - 25 Amp # 331-BCDC1225D. This will give you a 25 amp charge to your trailer battery when towing your trailer and will allow it to charge up to 100% without overcharging it. You will also need the 40 Amp Fuse Kit for Redarc In-Vehicle DC to DC Battery Charger # 331-FK40 for this installation.
