Weight Distribution with Sway Control for 2005 Nissan Xterra Pulling a 21 Foot Travel Trailer
Question:
Im towing with a 2005 Xterra 2wd with Road Master Active suspension. I have ordered a 2012 forest river flagstaff 21fb TT. Tongue is 386,dry is 3229 and gross is 4786. With two tanks, battery and WD hitch Im thinking my tongue will approach 550 to 600 lbs.Which Steadi-Flex system should I use? Thank you.

When choosing a weight distribution system, you would ideally want the tongue weight of the trailer to be somewhere toward the middle of the effective tongue weight capacity range of the system. Determining the actual trailer ready to tow tongue weight is crucial in choosing the correct system for your needs. The weight of any cargo stored behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle also needs to be added to the tongue weight figure. I've linked to an article that explains how to find your trailer's tongue weight.
The Reese Steadi-Flex # RP66558 Weight Distribution System is designed for trailers with tongue weights ranging from 400-600 lbs, it might be a good choice for your trailer. If your tongue weight is above 500 lbs, go with the next higher rated system, # RP66559. Either system requires a hitch ball with a 1-1/4 inch diameter shank. For a 2 inch ball, use part # A-90 or for a 2-5/16 ball, use part # 19286.
I did a bit of research on the Xterra, and have found that its maximum manufacturer stated towing capacity is 5000 lbs. From what you describe, your trailer is pretty close to (or above) that figure. I would recommend weighing your trailer on a truck scale to determine its actual as-towed weight. Exceeding the manufacturers stated towing capacity can damage your vehicle.
Frequently towing a trailer whose weight is that close to capacity can be hard on a vehicle. I would recommend considering a transmission cooler, part # D13503 to protect your transmission.
