Wiring Trailer Battery to Power LED Interior Lights

Question:

Hi, I have a 2014 Haulmark Passport 6x12 trailer that I haul with my 2014 tundra. I would like install led lighting that can be run by battery power. Also I would like to eventually have the ability to hook up a generator. What is everything I need to install this? Is it possible to not have to rewire the whole trailer or can I keep the stock wiring? What size battery would you recommend for weekend use? Thanks

In order to install LED lights in your trailer, such as the Optronics Opti-Brite LED Interior Light # ILL08COB, you will just need to run the interior lights power wires to a switch like the Pollak # PK34513. To reach this length, I recommend using 10 or 12 gauge wire, like # 10-1-1, which is sold by the foot. You will then end the wire at your trailer battery's positive terminal. You can use quick splices # SWC501915-1 and butt connectors # 05732-2 to make the necessary connections.

I recommend simply checking for the amp draw on the lights you are wanting to install (along with the winch) to determine what size 12V battery you need in the trailer.

After you have connected the LED light power wires and ran them to the battery, you will just need to ground all the light ground wires to the trailer frame (or the negative battery post). You will also want to ground the battery negative terminal to the trailer frame.

Then, to maintain a charge on the auxilliary battery from your tow vehicle, you can run another power wire from the positive battery post to the 7-Way connector on the trailer. Just note that this will only maintain the battery's charge. To charge up the battery from a depleted state, I recommend the CTEK 3300 Battery Charger # CTEK56353, which will simply plug into a wall outlet.
