Since your 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 does not have a factory brake controller port, you will simply need to connect each of the wires individually from the brake controller to your truck.
If you do not yet have a brake controller, I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885. This proportional controller will activate the trailer brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your truck. It features an easy to read digital display, along with continuous diagnostics that will alert you to any potential issues.
On the controller, the white wire is for ground and the blue wire will connect to the brake output wire from your truck's 7-Way connector. The red wire from the controller will splice into the brake switch wire on your truck. This is the wire that sends a signal to the brake controller only when you press the brake pedal. I recommend using a circuit tester like # PTW2993 in order to determine the correct wire. The black wire from the brake controller will then be connected to the positive post on the truck's battery via a 20 amp fuse. This is what actually powers the controller. If you did not run a power lead or brake output from the 7-Way connector to the front of your truck, you can use the Wiring Kit # 5506, which includes 25 feet of 10-2 Duplex wire and the needed circuit breakers.
I have attached a great article on installing a brake controller that you might also find helpful.
