Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2016 Toyota 4Runner

Question:

I have a 2016 2wd 4Runner and am looking to install a towbar setup. I like your roadmaster setup and brackets. What wiring kit would you recommend using the factory lighting? I also have never seen this vehicle assist brake setups before. Are they necessary and worth installing. And last are there any other items I need for a towbar setup on my 4runner? Thanks

In order to flat tow your 2016 Toyota 4Runner, you will need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cable set, lighting solution, and a supplemental braking system. A supplemental braking system is indeed required by law in most states and many RV manufacturers will actually only honor your warranty if a braking system is in place when towing.

Starting with the base plate kit, the Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit # 1185-1 that you referenced is a great choice and is confirmed to fit your 4Runner as long as it is the SR5 or Trail model. This base plate kit features a nice hidden bracket design that will provide a sleek appearance and a black powder coat finish for corrosion resistance.

Then for a compatible tow bar, I recommend the Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain Tow Bar # RM-522. This tow bar has a 6,000 pound weight capacity and has a self-aligning design with extra-long telescoping arms that will allow for better maneuverability and easier towing. For a set of safety cables you can use # RM-645.

Then for a lighting solution, the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Wiring Kit # RM-15267 will work great. This kit will allow you to use your 4Runner's tail lights and wiring system while preventing feedback from the RV. It will let the vehicle accept your RV's tail, brake, and turn signal lights.

Then for a supplemental braking system, I highly recommend the Blue Ox Patriot Portable Braking System # BLU37TR. This is a great proportional system that will physically apply the brakes on your 4Runner at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your RV.

Lastly, you will likely need to a high-low adapter to keep your tow bar level.
