The various wiring kits offered for your 1998 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer Edition are shown on the linked page. Whether your wiring is a factory 4-pole like # 118241 or an aftermarket kit like # 118345 there will usually be a locking clip safety feature of some sort to prevent the harness from becoming disconnected. These and all other wiring kits for the vehicle are shown on the linked page.
Over time plastic can become pretty stiff (and brittle) so if the existing wiring has been in service for a long time the plastic locking clip may no longer respond to normal/moderate pressure. Disconnection will be easier if the material is warm since it will tend to remain more flexible at warmer temps. Cold will tend to make the plastic material more brittle and more likely to break.
Also, it is possible for corrosion inside the connector to make it difficult to disconnect it. If this is the case then a spray-on contact cleaner solvent might help.
