For your 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 with a step bumper, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Receiver Hitch # 75101. This Class III hitch is confirmed to fit your Dodge Ram with the step bumper and will use existing holes in the truck's frame for a no-drill installation. This hitch will provide you with a 2 inch receiver opening and a 5,000 pound towing capacity.
I have attached the written installation instructions that you can take a look at. The complete hardware kit will be included.
If you do not yet have a trailer wiring harness installed on the truck, I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118329. This custom-fit harness will install by plugging directly to the existing ports located under the truck, below the driver and passenger side tail lights. This will give you a 4-Way connector to connect with the trailer and power its rear signal lights.
You will also need a ball mount and hitch ball if you do not already have one. I have attached a great article that explains how to choose the best one for your setup along with a link that will take you to our available selection.
