Weight Distribution and Sway Control Recommendation for a Mobile Scout 30ft Travel Trailer

Question:

I have a mobile scout 30ft trailer. TW of 1200lbs and GVWR of 11,700 lbs. Will this hitch work with this trailer? I will pull it with a 2011 GMC 2500 Diesel. Strait-Line Weight Distribution w Sway Control - Trunnion Bar - 17,000 lbs GTW, 1,700 lbs TW Code: RP66075. Dual cam system.

I checked some photos online to get a look at the frame on your Mobile Scout 30ft Travel Trailer and, with the weights you listed, the Strait-Line weight distribution system, item # RP66075, would be a good choice for this trailer, if your 2011 GMC 2500 Diesel has a 2-1/2 inch receiver hitch.

If your truck has a 2 inch receiver hitch, the highest rated system we have is the Strait-Line system # RP66130, which is capable of 1500lbs tongue weight and 15000lbs gross trailer weight.

You will also need to make sure that there is room on the trailer frame at 29 inches from the center of the coupler for attachment of the snap up brackets.

If there is not room because of a trailer mounted battery or propane tanks, you will need to use bolt on chain hangers, item # RP58305, to attach the chains to the frame of your trailer. Attaching chains to the bolt on hangers is accomplished by hooking the trailer to the vehicle and using the trailer jack to lift the trailer and vehicle until the proper link in the spring bar chains can be placed on the hanger. Once the chain is attached, the weight is then lowered and the spring bars will distribute the weight. You will need to make sure you do not exceed 1400 lbs tongue weight or 14000 pounds gross trailer weight with this style of hanger.

With either Strait-Line weight distribution system you will also need a weight distribution shank, and a properly sized hitch ball. If your truck has the 2-1/2 inch hitch, the Reese Titan shank, item # RP54977, will be the correct shank and if you have a 2 inch hitch item # RP54970 will be the correct shank. For either system the Curt Trailer Hitch Ball, item # 63840, would be a good choice.

I have linked an installation video and instructions that should be helpful in making your decision.
