Yakima RidgeBack on 2014 Toyota Prius

Question:

Ive read other notes that say a class 1 hitch should be used to carry a maximum of two bikes. However, no class 2 hitch is available for the Toyota prius. Since the class 1 hitch has a tongue weight of 200 lbs, Im not sure why I couldnt carry 3-4 road bikes of lesser weight. For example 4 bikes x 25 lbs each = 100lbs + weight of Yakima Ridgeback-4 35lbs = 135 lbs So, fully loaded with four, 25lb bikes Im still 65lbs below the tongue weight. Am I missing something here? Thank you!

Your question is a logical one, and the answer is that tongue weight isn't determined solely by adding up the weight of your Yakima RidgeBack # Y02458 and the four bikes it carries. A Class I hitch like the Draw-Tite # 24847 has a tongue weight of 200 lbs, and because tongue weight is the downward force being applied on the hitch, the further out the weight goes, the more force that is exerted on the hitch as well as the rack, potentially causing damage.
