On your 2017 Ford Edge, the battery must be disconnected when flat towing because Ford wants to prevent the battery from draining. When you flat tow, your vehicle must have the ignition in the ACC position, and this will leave certain electronic components on that can drain the battery. A dead battery could cause functions of your vehicle to not operate correctly when towing, so it is wise to follow the manufacturer requirements to prevent draining your battery.

To make this disconnection easy and not require removing cables from your battery each time, I recommend the Roadmaster Automatic Battery Disconnect with Switch for Towed Vehicle w/ Supplemental Braking System # RM-766. This will allow you to disconnect the battery while still maintaining charge for accessories. A charge line like # RM-156-25 is a good idea if you have a braking system that is using power from the towed vehicle's battery while it is disconnected.

Let me know if you have further questions or want recommendations for flat towing components on this vehicle.
