Weight Distribution System Recommendation for 1600 lb Camper

Question:

I have a pop up camper that weighs approx 1600 lbs with a tongue weight around 300 lbs. Im looking for a weight distribution hitch that would be suitable for a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. Also, if the trailer jack is mounted on the side of the tongue instead of in the center, will a WDH still work without removing the jack?

The trailer hitches for your 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport like the Curt hitch part # C13152 are rated for use with weight distribution systems so you can use a WD system with your vehicle. Before we get in to that you are going to have to go to a standard A-frame style jack as a side mount would interfere with the spring bars unless the jack is mounted over 32 inches from the center of the hitch ball center of the coupler.

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.

For a tongue weight of 300 lb the best setup would be the Reese Strait Line part # RP66082 as it has a tongue weight range of 200-600 lbs and features only sway control designed to fight sway before it starts.

For a 2 inch ball you would want part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball # 19286.

For a jack an A-frame jack like the # PS1400600303 would be an easy and inexpensive solution.
