Using a Kuat NV1 With a 2 Inch Shank on a 2009 Mini Clubman
Question:
I have 2 Pedego City Commuters and want to use my 2009 Mini Cooper S clubman to haul them. I currently have a Kuat NV 1.0 bike rack that has a 2inch shaft. Any options??

I have a solution for you, but for the 2009 Mini Clubman, there is only a single trailer hitch receiver available for your vehicle, the Curt Class I hitch, part # C11387. I've included a link to our installation tips to help your install go as smoothly as possible. You'll need to trim the fascia with tin snips like part # PT79ZR.
You could technically use your existing Kuat NV1, but you'll need to use a hitch adapter like part # HTAD, the problem is that this will reduce your hitch's tongue weight capacity by 50% to only 100 pounds, rendering it unable to carry both the rack at 49 pounds and Pedego City Commuters, that from my research appear to be around 63 pounds with their battery installed. This will risk damage to the hitch, vehicle and bikes, and I can't recommend it as a safe option.
In either case, you'll want to check your vehicle's towing rating with your owner's manual or the manufacturer to ensure that your 2009 Mini Clubman can handle the weight of the bikes plus rack.
Instead, I recommend picking up an additional rack, specifically for the Clubman. From the picture you sent me it looks like you use your Kuat NV1 pretty frequently for trips on a larger vehicle, so a smaller, easy to store rack is likely more appropriate for use around town.
Specifically, I recommend the Thule T2 Classic 2 Bike Platform Rack, part # TH9045. If you're able to shed some weight off the bikes by removing the batteries, and can get them to at or under 50 lbs each, this is the only option that will work for your application. With a 100 lb weight capacity, this is the highest rated bike rack that is also compatible with a class I hitch.
