Landing Gear Replacement for a 28 foot North Trail 5th Wheel Trailer
Question:
I own a 28 foot North Trail 5th wheel and at our last camping trip the left landing gear slipped while trying to raise the trailer to hook up. What is the best rated weight for my 5th wheel? It has a dry weight of 11,380 pounds. I have since removed the damaged leg and know that the shaft nut has striped. What would be the best way to repair this? Replace with shaft nut, gears ect. or replace everything, meaning both landing gear and cross shaft. My leg measures 29 1/2 inches with an 18 inch leg. What do you think would be the thing to do? Looking forward to hearing what you have to say. Thank you,

Typically when something like that happens to your 5th wheel landing gear the best thing to do is replace your whole landing gear set. If you were to just replace one side then the gear ratios could be slightly off which would not be a good situation.
We do have the Stromberg Carlson Electric Landing Gear Set # LG-1 which has leg lengths of 29-1/2", drop legs that measure 15", and 19-7/8" of travel giving you a total lift of 34-7/8" overall. It can be operated manually or with the included electric motor. This landing gear has a weight capacity of 5,500 lbs which should be just fine for your application because landing gear is only meant to help support part of the weight of your trailer.
To avoid making modifications to the existing frame clamps on your 5th wheel trailer it is best to choose a replacement landing gear set that has the same weld stop measurements that you currently have. The Landing Gear Set # LG-1 has weld stops that measure 17-1/2" outside to outside and 15-1/2" inside to inside as the attached photo shows.
Let me know if your current landing gear has different weld stop measurements and I can see if we have something similar.
