Recommended Tires for 26 Foot Toy Hauler Carrying 2 Harleys

Question:

just purchased a used 26 foot toy hauler travel trailer. original tires are load rate c, but load rate rating suggests we should use load rate d. we will be hauling 2 harleys for a total trailer weight of ~ 6500 pounds. dual axles, can we continue to use the load rate c or should we upgrade to load rate D???

Expert Reply:

The weight of your trailer when loaded along with the individual axle capacity will dictate the load that is actually on the tires. The load C tires may be able to handle the weight, but they will most likely limit the weight capacity of your system if I understand what you are referencing. I've attached a couple articles to assist.

If you system suggests using Load D tires, then I recommend upgrading to the thicker ply rating for safety. You will also want to consider the speed rating and the style of tire. With toy haulers you are normally doing highway driving and I recommend using a radial tire with an appropriate speed rating.

For instance, if you have 2 3500 lb axles, I recommend the Provider ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" Vesper Silver Mod Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # MX97FR. This is a tire rated for 2150 lbs at 65 psi and is rated for speeds up to 81 mph. These tires have an 8 ply rating and a 2 year warranty. It may be more than you need for load capacity, but I'd want my Harley to ride on some good tires.
