Acceptable Range of Spindle Deflection on Torsion Axle

Question:

We have a U Haul camping trailer with a torsion axle. I am wondering if the axle is worn out. There is plenty of clearance above the tires to the wheel wells when the weight of the trailer is on the axle, supposedly a good sign. However, the difference in movement from when the weight of the trailer is on the axle as compared to when the weight is lifted off of the axle is less than an inch. My understanding is that the movement in a torsion axle is only 2 to 3 inches anyway so is the axle in need of replacement or still good? Thanks so much

Expert Reply:

Torsion axles can have different spindles with varying geometry. The specific spindle installed will have a specific range of deflection angle. The spindles on torsion axles can deflect as much as 4-inches between the unloaded and loaded conditions. A 1-inch height drop suggests you are well within the axle capacity and that it is not worn out.
