The best way to go for steep climbs and down hills is to have a good brake controller for the descent so you can use the manual adjuster as needed to apply brakes to only the trailer and the brake pedal to use brakes for both vehicle and trailer. I recommend a proportional brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. You will want to make sure you don't overheat your brakes by using them too often, but still use them as needed to maintain control.

For the up hill climbs, your transmission will be working hard, so I recommend using a transmission cooler to keep it running as cool as possible. For your 2004 Expedition 5.4L 4x4, I recommend the Derale Dyno-Cool Remote Cooler with Fan and Hose Barb Inlets - Class III # D12742. This cooler kit provides additional cooling and protection and can mount anywhere you have space. It has an 8 pass configuration allowing the fluid to have time to cool properly utilizing consistent air movement with the fan before returning to the transmission. I also recommend the Derale Radiator Adapter Fittings for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury # D13025 for this cooler.
