Recommended Weight Distribution System for a 2005 Ford F-150 Towing a 2-Horse Trailer
Question:
I have a 2005 Ford F150 with a 5.4L, V8 engine. I need to tow a large 2-horse trailer, fully loaded weighing in at about 8000lbs. The trailer weighs 5000lbs empty so I assume the TW is 500lbs. What system would you recommend??

Expert Reply:
Trailer tongue weight us usually between 10-15 percent of the fully loaded trailer weight. With an 8000 lb fully loaded and ready to tow weight, your tongue weight could range from 800-1200 lbs.
You'll also need to add the weight of anything stored in the truck bed behind the rear axle as tongue weight.
I'll link you to an FAQ article that shows how to nail down your exact tongue weight.
I'd recommend using a weight distribution system that also offers sway control. Having a system with integrated sway control will protect from sway caused by cross winds or turbulence from oncoming traffic, which will make you (and your horses) much happier.
I really like the Reese Steadi-Flex system, part # RP66560. This system is rated for trailers with tongue weights ranging from 600-1200 lbs, and would be an excellent choice for your horse trailer.
The system includes a weight distributing shank, but the appropriately sized trailer ball is sold separately. For a 2 inch ball, use part # A-90 or # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch ball.
