Transmission Cooler and Pan Recommendations for Towing with a 2001 Ford Expedition 5.4 Liter
Question:
What are your recommendations for a transmission cooler for a 2001 Ford Expedition 5.4 L engine 4X4. What about a deeper transmission pan? What would be the better solution, as I will be doing a lot of towing of my new 24 travel trailer.

For your 2001 Ford Expedition with 5.4 L engine, I would recommend the largest cooler that will fit in front of the AC condenser at the front of the vehicle. The Derale Series 9000 Transmission Cooler Kit, item # D13614, would be a good choice. You will also need the Derale Radiator Adapter Fittings for Ford, item # D13025, to complete the installation on your 5.4 Liter Expedition.
A larger capacity transmission pan would be a good idea also. If your Expedition has a 4R100 transmission the Derale Transmission Pan Cooler, item # D14208, will be the correct part. This pan holds 7 quarts and 30 ounces and has cooling tubes that help to cool the fluid when traveling.
You should check to be sure which transmission is in your Expedition, I show the possibility of a 4R70W transmission that we do not stock a large capacity pan for.
I would go with the cooler before a larger capacity pan and if you feel more cooling is needed, then go with the pan. You cannot cool transmission fluid too much so all the cooling you can supply will help the transmission when towing. 200 degrees would be the absolute maximum acceptable temperature when towing. The only thing to take into account is that on very cold winter days, you should let the transmission warm a bit before placing demanding loads on it.
