Rear Helper Springs for a 2002 GMC Sierra 4x4 1500 LD Extended Cab

Question:

Hi, I have a 2002 GMC Sierra 1500, Ext cab short bed, 4x4 Z71, with the lowering shackles in the rear. The truck sits perfectly level and rides very smooth without any load. When I pull any of my trailers it tends to sag a bit. I was looking at the Helper spings kit and wondered if this would be sufficient to solve my sag problem? What would you recommend? Im looking for the best bang for the buck, cost conscience option. Thank you.

The ideal way to prevent rear end sag when towing a trailer is to use weight distribution. Helper springs are designed for loads carried in the truck which is why they aren't the best option for this situation. But I will give you both options.

First since you are interested in helper springs we can look at those first. The SumoSprings # SSR-209-40 could work but the trailer, if heavy enough, could still cause squat. A stiffer systems such as Timbren springs # TGMRCK15S (for the 3-door extended cab) or # TGMRCK25S (4-door extended cab) will do a better job.

If you are interested in weight distribution then to choose a system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. If you can give me that or even your best estimate I can make more specific recommendations.
