Recommendation For Converting to Disc Brakes on AL-KO T-44 Axle
Question:
Hi, Heres the deal: Im desperate to convert to disc brakes due to my hauling situation. With that said, Im running in to issues with the Kodia brakes I ordered and the odd axles. 1. My current wheels are 16s with a pattern of 6 on 5 1/2 2. My tandem Axles are Alko T-44 4400 which appears to be a not so popular brand. 3. The distance between hub face to hub face is 79, the Spring are roughly 69inch apart. 4. I ordered ORDER # 105733894 the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 12inch Hub/Rotor - 6 on 5-1/2. What I didnt realize was up top its stated it will fit a standard spindle and than down below you mention a #42 What I want to know is this: How can I get to disc brakes. Its apparent the the current Disc will fit on the spindle, but not with the addition of the brake mount. Im going to assume this is due to the #42 spindle requirement. Im prepared to swap out the axles if I can find what I need to get these disc brakes mounted. I need your expert advice on what to do next because the only 6 on 5-1/2 setups Im seeing are for the larger capacity axles.

The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR526D referenced in your question is designed for 5,200 to 6,000 pound axles. As you mentioned, this kit is compatible with the #42 spindle and uses the # 25580 inner bearing and # 15123 outer bearing. When choosing a hub and rotor kit that will fit your trailer's spindle, going by the bearing numbers in your existing hubs is the most accurate method.
Based on my research, the AL-KO T-44 axle spindle on your trailer uses the # L68149 inner bearing and # LM67048 outer bearing. I recommend verifying this on your trailer by simply pulling the hubs and checking for the numbers that should be stamped onto the bearings themselves.
If these are indeed the bearings on your spindle, we do not currently have a hub and rotor disc brake kit that is compatible. If you are wanting to convert to disc brakes, the best option may be to replace your existing axle with a Timbren Axle-Less System like the part # ASR5200S01. This suspension system will provide a smooth, quiet, safe ride and can eliminate the need for an axle. It will fit any frame width and the straight, EZ Lube spindle is compatible with your existing Kodiak Disc Brake Kit mentioned above.
I have attached a video demonstration on this system so you can see exactly how it works and installs.
