How to Select a Ball Mount or Draw Bar with the Correct Ball Hole Size 1-1/4"

Question:

I need a hitch with a specific hole size where the ball goes, this dimension is not provided in any of the hitches listed. Its a 2 5/16 ball with a 1 1/4 shank, so the hole on the hitch needs to be big enough, some are too small. Why is this dimension never listed in ANY product info?

This is a great question! Although we do list the ball hole diameter in the specs for each ball mount, there is an easier way to make sure a ball mount has the hole size you need. Any ball mount rated for Class IV hitches will have a 1-1/4" ball hole. As you have discovered, ball mounts rated for Class III hitches can have either a 1" or a 1-1/4" ball hole. If you stick with Class IV ball mounts you can be sure they will have the correct ball hole diameter and they will fit 2" hitches that are either Class III or IV. One of the most popular ball mounts for your truck is the Draw-Tite 3" Rise & 4" Drop, # 4281. To help determine the correct rise and drop for your situation, I've attached a helpful article on choosing the correct ball mount. I've also provided a chart with the ball hole diameters of each class for reference.

Depending on the model of your 2006 Dodge Ram Pickup (and the rating of your hitch) your towing capacity is between 2900 and 12,000 lbs. Please keep in mind that using a ball mount that is rated higher than your truck or hitch towing capacity will not increase the capacity of either. Your towing capacity will always be limited by the lowest rated link in your towing setup - vehicle, hitch or ball mount.
