Bike Rack and Roof Rack Recommendations to Carry More than 2 Bikes on a 2013 Toyota Corolla

Question:

Hello, I had recently purchased the Curt class 1 - 1 1/4inch towing hitch for my 2013 Toyota Corolla S and was wondering if this bike rack is compatible with it. It is advertised as having a 1 1/4inch hitch, however I had also noticed that it says it is class II and III compatible but makes no mention of class one hitches

Curt 4 Bike Rack for 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Tilting Item # C18030 is designed for Class II and above trailer hitches so it would not be a good fit for the Class I hitch on your 2013 Toyota Corolla. Class I trailer hitches are only compatible with bike racks that are rated for use with a Class I hitch. Also, on a Class I trailer hitch you are limited to carry 2 bikes maximum (even if the bike rack can hold more).

It isn't an issue with the weight but rather how far that weight is from the receiver. Up to 2 bikes is fine but a third and subsequent bikes will be too far from a Class I hitch receiver. For a 2 bike rack that is compatible with a Class I hitch I recommend the Curt # C18085. This rack also weighs just 20 pounds so it is easy to handle. I have included a link to a video review of this rack for you.

Another thing is that Curt requires the use of stabilization strap # 18050 when using their hitch with anything other than a trailer; in this case a bike rack. I have included a video that shows how this strap is used. On the BikeWing it would have to connect to one of the nearest uprights.

To carry more than 2 bikes you can add a roof rack. To keep the cost down the most economical roof rack option is the semi-custom fit SpwortRack roof rack # SR1002. Then you can add a couple of roof bike racks such as the Thule ProRide XT, # TH598004, to carry 2 additional bikes. With this rack you will not have to remove the front tire to load the bike.
