If you have a brake controller and are getting brakes locking up, the issue may be something is wired incorrectly. You will need to use a circuit tester such as # 40376 to test the functions of both the trailer and vehicle side connectors. Brakes locking up is also common on trailers that have a 6-pole round plugged into a 7-way with an adapter.
If you do not have a brake controller, and your trailer has electric over electric-over-hydraulic brakes, you will have to have a brake controller. Should you need one, I strongly recommend the Prodigy P2 # 90885, a proportional controller with a digital display and three boost levels. The adapter that goes with is # 3025-P. If you have the factory 7-way, you will not need any other parts, otherwise you are going to need the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7.
I have added links to a couple review video of these products, as well as some help articles on brake controllers for you to take a look at.
