Hitch Cargo Carriers Compatible with Class II Hitch on 2014 Lincoln MKS

Question:

Can you tell me for product FHG77ZR, what are the inside usable dimensions? How much will the back bottom edge of the carrier sag when holding a 350lb load?

The Flint Hill Goods Hitch-Mount Cargo Carrier # FHG77ZR has usable interior space that measures 50-1/4" long x 30-7/8" wide x 3-3/4-inchs tall. This carrier fits into 2-inch Class III trailer hitches.

Do please note that your 2014 Lincoln MKS can only be fitted with a 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch so this carrier is not usable on this vehicle.

We do have cargo carriers that are designed for the lighter-duty Class II hitches and you can see all of them on the linked page. These include the cargo carriers from Reese, like part # 63155. We include the inside tray dimensions for these in the Specs section on each item's page.

When using a hitch-mounted cargo carrier most of the rear sag will come from the vehicle suspension and NOT from bending of the carrier's shank or of the hitch tube. The further away from the hitch the actual weight load is the more sag you are likely to notice since that longer distance translates into increased leverage on the vehicle's rear suspension. It is hard to give you an exact amount of sag to expect since there are many variables, but I would say that 300-lbs of cargo on a hitch carrier will result in 2 or 3-inches of sag at the back edge of the carrier.

Also note that when using ANY carrier in ANY hitch, the combined weight of the carrier itself, plus that of the loaded cargo items, must together not exceed either the hitch tongue weight (TW) rating or the vehicle's own TW rating. The Class II hitches made for your MKS are rated for 300-lbs of tongue weight; this means that the carrier weight plus the cargo weight cannot exceed this 300-lbs for the hitch. If the vehicle itself has a lower TW rating than the hitch that is made for it, then that lower vehicle rating becomes the overall rating.

The two linked articles on cargo carrier may be helpful to you as you review the available options.

I also linked our page for tie-down straps like # EM05729 that are often helpful with cargo carriers.
