Adding a 7-Way Trailer Connector and Brake Controller to a 2017 RAV4 Hybrid
Question:
I have the T-One 4 flat wiring harness already installed on my 2017 Rav4 Hybrid. I would like details on adding the ETBC7 to that wiring. The battery is in the back of the Rav4 Hybrid. In addition, I would like to add a proportional brake controller like one of the Tekonshas 90855. Can I get the brake signal shown as the cold side in the diagram I have seen for the controller from one of the brake light cables in the T-One instead of tapping into the really delicate wiring under the dash? The intent is to run all the wiring to the controller so it is visible in the car and use a temporary mounting instead of drilling into the dash. When not towing a trailer I will wrap up the wiring and controller and stow it in the back of the car.

Installation of the install kit # ETBC7 is basically the same for all vehicles since it is a hardwire installation. I have included a link to a video showing installation on a 2011 Toyota RAV4 which will be nearly identical to installation on your 2017. I have also linked our help article on ETBC7 installations for you.
Since the battery is at the back of the vehicle that actually makes the 12 volt power wire connection easier since you won't have to run that wire as far.
The cold side of the brake switch is going to have to be determined by testing the brake switch wires using the included circuit tester. You need the wire that has power only when the brake pedal is pressed. If it has power when the headlights or turn signals are on then it is not the correct wire.
A proportional brake controller needs to be permanently mounted because it has a specific range that it can be mounted in and cannot be turned or tilted to one side. In order to have a controller that is not permanently mounted you would need to use a time delay controller such as the Draw-Tite Activator IV # 5504. Time delay controllers do not have a specific mounting range so how they are positioned would not affect performance. Then you could use some type of stick-on Velcro to avoid drilling.
