Recommended Axle Replacement For Ubilt Trailer With Custom Extended Frame
Question:
I have a ubuilt trailer that the original frame is at 46 inch on center. The outer rail of the frame has been extended to 61 inches. Now hub to hub the axle would have to be 72 inches. Can I relocate the spring perches to 46 from 58 inches. Axle replacment

Moving the spring perches from 46 to 58 inches can cause a problem if you are not updating your axle. If you are getting a new axle like the Dexter Trailer Idler Axle w/ Hubs - EZ-Lube - 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern - 72" Long - 2,200 lbs # 20545I-EZ-72-10 then you can move the spring hangers on your trailer to accommodate the axle. I've linked the page to spring hanger options.
If you cannot find a good attachment point for hangers and axles to be compatible, then I recommend the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System w Hubs - Straight Spindle - 5 on 4-1/2 - # A35RS545 which replace the leaf springs and don't need to be any specific widths. This gives you a suspension system as well as axles. If you don't mount at a cross-brace location, you can simply use a 2x2 inch square bar in the integrated holes for proper bracing.
