Best Weight Distribution System with Sway Control for 2012 Nissan Xterra and 2012 Toyota 4Runner

Question:

Hi, I own both a 2012 Nissan Xterra and a 2012 Toyota 4Runner. I will be purchasing a new Winnebago Micro Minnie 1808 new model. Its unloaded weight is 3300#s GVWR 7000. Both vehicles tow rating is 5000#s. Tongue weight is 500 lbs on TV. Both vehicles also have Brake Control installed for towing. I have been researching Weight Distribution w/sway control, but wanted to make sure I purchase one that can be used on both vehicles. Which products would do you recommend. Thank you for your prompt reply purchasing new trailer next week.

The only issue you might run into as far as compatibility between the two vehicles is that the rise/drop needed to tow the trailer level might be different on the Nissan and Toyota. I'm attaching an article on choosing a ball mount for you to check out. It explains how to determine the rise/drop between your hitch and coupler. If you'd like to send me the rise/drop measurements for your two vehicles, I'd be happy to make sure you have all the necessary components.

The other thing to consider is the tongue weight of your trailer. The tongue weight should typically be between 10%-15% of the total loaded trailer weight. I'm also attaching an article on how to determine your tongue weight for your convenience. When choosing a weight distribution system you will want to know the total tongue weight of your towing setup. This includes the loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer plus the weight of any cargo loaded in the tow vehicle behind the rear axle. Once you know your total tongue weight, you can select the ideal weight distribution system.

For a total tongue weight between 200-600 lbs, I recommend the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w Sway Control, # RP66082. This system features trunnion spring bars, prevents sway before it starts, includes a shank, and has a gross towing weight of 10,000 lbs.

This same system is also offered with a greater tongue weight capacity. For a total tongue weight between 700-1,200 lbs, I recommend the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w Sway Control, # RP66084, which has a tongue weight capacity of 1,200 lbs and a gross towing weight of 12,000 lbs.

Both systems also require a hitch ball with a 1-1/4-inch diameter shank, sold separately, # A-90.
