Upgrading Hitch Receiver Weight Capacity for 2005 Ford Ranger

Question:

WD hitch system for 2005 Ford Ranger. I have a after market WD hitch that I was told was rated @600#. I have been towing a trailer with a hitch weight of 350#. If I go to a heavier trailer with a hitch weight of 550# and I get a hitch rated @800# do I have to change the receiver?

If by the receiver you are referring to the shank, then the answer is, "it depends." Your towing setup is always limited by its lowest-rated component, so if your shank's capacity doesn't meet or exceed the weight of the new trailer tongue weight, you will have to change the shank. Also, if your new trailer is higher/lower than your previous trailer, you may need to use a different shank to achieve the necessary rise/drop.

If, however, your shank has the necessary rise/drop capability as well as the weight capacity to handle the new trailer, then you can continue to use the shank you already have.
