Best Fifth-Wheel Trailer Hitch Options for 2007 Dodge 2500 Heavy Duty Quad Cab 4x4
Question:
I read some of your advice. I do have a 6 and 1/2 foot bed in my 2007 dodge 2500 heavy duty quad cab 4x4...at present we have a 24 ft tow behind, thinking about selling it trailer and getting a 5th wheel. What do you recommend? I dont want to have to get out and move the hitch whenever I need to make a sharp turn. WhI checked is the most reliable and safe hitch to use, and what is my towing capacity?

Because your truck has a “short” bed (6-1/2 feet), I recommend going with an automatic sliding hitch. An automatic sliding hitch, as opposed to a traditional sliding hitch, will allow you to make those sharp turns without having to get out and move the hitch yourself. Instead, the hitch will automatically adjust when you make a turn. I've attached a demonstration video of an automatic sliding hitch for you to check out.
There are two main options for the automatic sliding hitch—an above-bed installation and a below-bed installation.
The Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider - Single Jaw - Above Bed - 21,000 lbs, # DM8550035, is an above-bed option that is compatible with most industry-standard base rails. This hitch provides a wraparound single-piece jaw for 360-degree contact, a double-pivot hitch head, and polyurethane dampeners to help reduce noise and absorb road shock. I also recommend using the base rails and installation kit # RP56011-53 for use with this hitch. This is a custom kit confirmed to fit your vehicle, so it's made to fit into existing holes in the truck frame, thus drastically reducing installation time and minimizing the amount of drilling required.
If it's important for you to retain the full use of your truck bed when the hitch is removed, then another option that might work better for you is our Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider - Single Jaw - Under Bed - 21,000 lbs, # DM8550037. This hitch provides the same safety and convenience features as the above-bed hitch. However, this hitch has the added bonus of leaving your truck bed free and clear when the hitch is removed, since there are no base rails to protrude from the bed. You'll want to use the Underbed Rail and Installation Kit for Demco Hijacker UMS 5th Wheel and Gooseneck Trailer Hitches, # DM8551005, with this hitch, as this kit is confirmed to fit your vehicle.
I've attached video reviews for each of these hitches for you to check out.
