How to Install the Brake Controller Kit # ETBC7 with Tekonsha Prodigy RF Brake Controller # TK27FR
Question:
I just recently purchased a camper and the Dealer supplied tekonsha RF controller. I have a 2006 XC70 wagon. when using the ETBC7 is there anything different about wiring that harness than is in the online tutorial? Just some clairfication I chose this controller because the battery for my car sits just inside the rear hatch, and I really didnt want to route wires all the way through the car to install a less expensive controller under the dash. I already have an existing flat 4 pin that was factory installed.

The difference in the installation of the Brake Controller 7 and 4 Way Installation Kit, part # ETBC7, when using it with the Tekonsha Prodigy RF Brake Controller, part # TK27FR, on your 2006 Volvo XC70 is that you will not need to connect the blue wire that is normally hardwired to the brake controller. It will not be needed since the Prodigy RF will communicate with the remote unit by radio frequencies. Also, since your vehicles battery is in the rear the wiring will not need to go the length of the car. I am including a link to the installation details for the Prodigy RF unit below.
What you will need to do is plug in your factory 4-Way on your vehicle into the back of the # ETBC7 and wire the black wire, and white ground wire (tape off and secure the blue and purple wires) to your vehicle. Attach the white ground wire to an existing ground point or to the vehicle frame. Route a length of wire from the black wire, under the vehicle, and up into the rear hatch area avoiding areas that might pinch or burn the wire. This wire will connect to the positive battery terminal via a 40 amp breaker you will mount near the battery. After that, mount the RF brake controller to the trailer and you are ready to go. I am including a link to a FAQ page on installing the # ETBC7 kit.
This RF Brake Controller is a good investment if you plan on towing the trailer with multiple vehicles (each vehicle would need a 7-Way). Then you could just move the remote from vehicle to vehicle.
