Causes of Trailer Tires Wearing In Center On My Triple Dexter Axle Car Hauler

Question:

I have a car hauler trailer that has 3 3500lb dexter axles. I replaced all the bolts, shackle links, and equilizers. And Now I have the problem of the tires wearing from the center to the outside. I have not had this problem before I replaced the parts. I was wondering if the shackle links or the equilizer bars would cause any strange tire wear? Thanks

If any of the components were bent or damaged there is a chance that the bent parts could be causing the irregular tire wear that you are seeing. If a component was bent you would usually see tire wear on the inside or the outside of the tire depending on which way the part is bent.

More than likely the tire wear is being caused by the amount of air in the tires. If the tires are over inflated, then typically you would see more wear in the center of the tires. If the tires are under inflated, you would see tire wear on both the inside and outside edges of the tire.

Trailer tires should be inflated to their maximum indicated PSI Rating as stated on the tire for best performance and longer life of the tire.

You also want to make sure to always use tires that are rated for trailer use, which would be indicated by the letters ST which stands for Special Trailer tire.

I have linked an FAQ on tires that you may find as a good reference.
