Weight Distribution Recommendation for 7,000 lb Trailer
Question:
Was wondering what you could recommend for my application. I use the trailer as my utility trailer so sometimes running empty or loading with a couple hundred pounds or less of tools and materials. At other times the max load would be 4K lbs of stone or dirt. Was thinking about the Reese SC system # RP66155 but not sure of my empty tongue weight and I read in another reply the minimum would have to be 600 lbs? The Reese SC also has a much higher rating than I would ever tow with it so didnt think it was the best option for me. Let me know if you can help. Thank you

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.
Since you are going to have a wide range of tongue weights it's going to be hard to pick out an ideal system that covers everything. Basically you'll want to go with a system rated for the highest possible tongue weight since that's when you'd need it the most.
For a 2 inch ball you would want part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball # 19286.
Realistically your tongue weight will be between 700 and 1,000 lbs so a # RP66560 that you referenced would be perfect as it has a range of 600-1,200 lbs.
