Finding the Stop Light Signal Wire to Install an Electric Brake Controller in a 2006 Jeep Commander
Question:
Im installing a brake controller. Im referencing your video on an installation on a 2010 jeep commander. I have a 2006 commander. In the video it has the brake switch as a white with light green, but I dont see that on my 2006. I see a white with a tan color. Is that it?

Unfortunately, vehicle manufacturers have no color code or pattern that they must stick to. So, it's quite common for wiring to be different colors, even sometimes within the same model and model year. So, the best way to determine the correct wire is by function using a light tester like # PTW2993.
When installing a trailer brake controller, like the Prodigy P2 # 90885 in the video you mentioned, the red wire from the controller needs to be connected to the cold side of the stop light switch. The wire you need only shows power when the brake pedal is pressed. If it shows power all of the time then your trailer's brakes will constantly be locked up.
So, use the light tester to probe the wire you think it is and if it isn't showing power at first press the brake pedal. If it shows power with the pedal pressed, you have the correct wire.
