Trailer Hitch, Wiring, and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2011 Toyota RAV4

Question:

I have a 2011 Toyota Rav4 - 4 cylinder. Im in the process of buying a Thule 4 bike rake and discovered that I needed a hitch since I do not want the one ones that go over the spare tire. Since I need a hitch which would be the best option for me if I in the future want to use it to tow NOT just bikes.. Your advise would be golden!!

Since you plan on towing in the future and want to use a 4-bike rack with your 2011 Toyota RAV4 I recommend going with etrailer Class III Receiver Hitch - 2011 Toyota RAV4 # e98864. This is a Class III trailer hitch so it is more stout and has more accessory options compared to a smaller Class II hitch.

With this hitch installed the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole out to clear the spare tire is about 7 inches. The bike rack you use will need to extend out further to clear the spare. I recommend the Thule Hitching Post Pro - Folding Tilting 4 Bike Rack w Anti-Sway - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches Item # TH934XTR. it measures 13-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the upright mast so it will clear the spare. If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across (like a typical men's bike would) then I recommend using bike adapter bar # 64005. This will allow you to carry those bikes more level and will provide better ground clearance. I have linked a video showing how the adapter works.

Since you mentioned towing I also recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, use the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.
