Recommended Weight Distribution System for Trailer with Less than 500 Pounds Tongue Weight
Question:
Hi there, Im looking at the PRO Series RP66560 weight distribution kit with sway control. At 750 lbs tongue weight, is even this too heavy for a large tent trailer with a GVWR of 3275? Ive read about the possiibilty of too rigid and bouncy a ride with spring bars rated over what is needed. Am I close enough with an expected tongue weight of around 500lbs rear cargo in our Chevy Astro + 10-15 GVWR? Incidentally, the installed receiver is a Class III, rated for 5000 / 500 lbs. Thanks so much for your advice!

If the total tongue weight of your loaded trailer plus the weight added behind the rear axle of your Astro is less than 500 pounds then yes, the Pro Series Weight Distribution System # RP66560 is rated too high for you and could cause a rigid ride. You want the combined number to be at least 550 pounds with this system.
A more appropriate system is the Pro Series # PS49901 which is rated up to 550 pounds.
The Fastway e2 # FA94-00-0600 that's rated between 400 to 600 pounds is another option. It allows you to back up without having to disconnect the system where the Pro Series will not. With this system you'll need to add a hitch ball. Use either # EQ91-00-6080 for a 2 inch ball or # EQ91-00-6100 for a 2-5/16 inch.
